Pre-Charged Air Rifles

Most people see a Pre-Charged Pneumatic (PCP) as the latest incarnation in the evolution of airguns. It surprises many when they learn that the first PCP saw active service in the early 1800s and the genesis model; The Girardoni Air Rifle produced 117ftlbs of energy at the muzzle and was capable of firing a 150-200gr lead ball at over 500ft per second!

Today, the PCP is an increasingly popular choice for UK airgunners as they can be very versatile with a broad choice of aesthetics. Most airgun manufacturers have a broad selection of designs in a vast selection of calibres such as; .177, .20, .22. .25 .30 and .35. Each PCP air rifle follows a common principle; an on-board compressed air reservoir that can be pressurised up to 250bar (3525psi) that is filled from either a compressor, a higher pressurised cylinder or a hand pump. When the rifle is cocked a measured amount of air is migrated from the rifle's cylinder to a chamber (plenum) ready for use. That air is released when the trigger is pulled and will propel the pellet along the rifled barrel. Often, PCP air rifles will incorporate regulators to increase efficiency, improve precision and in turn, accuracy.

There are many advantages to a PCP air rifle over a traditional spring or pneumatic air rifle. They are often light, most will have multi-shot capabilities and they have virtually no perceived recoil making them very easy to shoot with immediate levels of accuracy. Due to their complex nature they can be more expensive to purchase than their traditional brethren with some PCP air rifles costing many thousands of pounds.
