Chicago studs, also known as screw posts or binding posts, are a type of mechanical fastener made up of two pieces: a hollow post and a threaded screw. The post passes through a pre-made hole in the material, and the screw is tightened into it from the opposite side, clamping the materials together securely. They are commonly made from brass, steel, or aluminium and are available in various lengths to suit different material thicknesses.

They are widely used in leatherwork, bookbinding, belts, straps, holsters, and outdoor gear because they provide a strong but removable connection. Unlike rivets, which are permanent, Chicago studs can be unscrewed and reused, making them useful for adjustable or repairable items. This makes them particularly practical in applications where parts may need to be replaced or repositioned over time.

The design typically features a smooth, rounded head on both sides, giving a neat and low-profile finish. Some versions include slotted or hex screw heads for tightening with tools, while others can be tightened by hand. A thread-locking compound is sometimes used to prevent them from loosening under vibration or repeated movement.

In use, they are valued for their combination of strength, reusability, and clean appearance. They are simple to install and remove, making them a versatile fastening solution across a range of practical and craft applications.

  • Two-part fastener with a post and screw used to join materials securely
  • Reusable and removable, unlike permanent rivets
  • Commonly used in leatherwork, straps, belts, and repairable equipment assemblies
