The Bisley Wool Mop is a firearm cleaning tool designed for the finishing stage of barrel maintenance. It attaches to a standard cleaning rod and is available in different sizes to suit various calibres and shotgun gauges. Its main purpose is to apply oil evenly inside the barrel and remove any remaining fine particles or moisture after the main cleaning process has been completed.
The mop is made from tightly wound wool fibres fixed around a central core. The wool is highly absorbent, allowing it to hold cleaning oil and distribute it evenly along the inside of the barrel as it is pushed and pulled through the bore. This helps leave a thin, protective layer that prevents rust and corrosion during storage. At the same time, the fibres pick up small amounts of remaining fouling, dust, or solvent left after brushing and patching.
In use, the wool mop is typically the final step in cleaning. After a bronze brush or jag has removed heavy fouling, and patches have cleaned the bore, the mop is used to finish the process. It ensures the barrel is left clean, dry where needed, and lightly oiled for protection. This step is important for maintaining long-term barrel condition, especially in humid or outdoor storage conditions.
The soft material makes it safe for regular use without risk of scratching or damaging the internal surface of the barrel. However, it is not intended for scrubbing or removing heavy fouling, as its role is purely for finishing and protection.
- Soft wool fibres apply oil evenly and remove fine residue during final barrel cleaning
- Used as a finishing tool after brushing and patch cleaning stages
- Safe for repeated use on shotgun, rifle, and airgun barrels without causing damage
